K-Valley Website guide

Here at KV-Scouts.org you will find vast amounts of information to better run your units. Much of the common information such as District Activities, The District Newsletter, and District Committee contact information will be found on pages that look like this one. What we mean by that is that the look and feel of all of the pages here in the "KV-Scouts Home area" is the same. Take a look at the header bar at the top of your browser window. The Maine license plate "logo" on the left and the picture of Mt. Katahdin on the right are present on all of the pages in this area. We do this so that you know at a glance what section of the site you are in.

In a similar fashion the other areas of the site also contain conventions that distinguish them from the rest while still maintaining some standard features. Take a look at the examples below and you'll see what we mean.

All of this was done to help us better organize the growing amount of information on the site as well as guide you in your quest for the information you need to help you run a better program in your unit whether what you seek is for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, The Order of the Arrow or just information useful to all.

Keep in mind as you explore the site that regardless of where you are at KV-Scouts.org you will always see the following six standards:

  • The main menu at the top leftMain Menu

No matter what page you visit on the site, the contents of the menu will be exactly the same. This way you can quickly jump to any page from anywhere. If you click on the "label" (for example "Boy Scouts") you will be taken directly to the "Boy Scout" Home page. If you let your mouse cursor hover there for a second you will see the menu drop down revealing all of the pages in that area. In some cases it is broken down into sub areas such as "Activities" to allow you to quickly find what you are looking for. You can be sure that any "sub-menu" we have is clearly marked by a "→".

  • The date/holiday text to the right of the menuDate/Holiday text

The date displayed is of course the current date but on various occasions you will see text to the right of the date. This text may denote a Holiday or perhaps a Scouting anniversary. The javascript that runs it is fully automatic and we have begun to expand it to include District events. So... if you are surfing the site and you see a District Scouting event displayed there that you were supposed to be at, quit surfing and leave! ;-)

  • A distinct "logo" for each area at the top left of the page (just below the main menu)Home buttons

Clicking on the logo will bring you directly back to the home page of that section of the site.

  • The quick link "bar menu" just below the logo on the top leftBar Menu

This menu will link you to some of the more popular areas of the site. Many of which are Web standards such as "About us" and "Search".

  • The "breadcrumb" trail to the right of the "bar menu"Breadcrumb trail

One of the best features of the site are the "breadcrumb" trail links. You may have seen them before on sites such as Amazon or NewEgg. It allows you at a glance to see which area (or sub-area) you are in. By clicking on any section of the "trail" you can go directly to that area without having to use your browser's "back" button or dig for it on the menu. However, don't think of it as a "history" of the pages you've been to but more of the position of where you are within the overall site right now.

  • The "last updated" script at the bottom of every page (In this case we moved it up to here, so the date shown is accurate.)

This page was last updated on:

This date shows you at a glance the last time we added to or changed any of the information on the page you have displayed. That way you can tell at a glance exactly how accurate (up to date) or inaccurate (old and out of date) the information is.

That about covers it. As the site grows we may expand the content into new areas such as one for Venture Crews. When that happens we will more than likely create a new "template" for that section to help distinguish it from the rest. Once it's complete we will add it to this page as well. We hope you have enjoyed this little tour and if you have any questions or comments about the site please feel free to e-mail us. We'd be more than happy to help you out.

Thank You
